Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations

Advancing the interests of the Afghan people, defending human rights, and engaging the international community in support of peace, justice, and an inclusive future for Afghanistan.

UN General Assembly meeting on the Situation of Afghanistan

A Message from the Chargé d'Affaires

On behalf of the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations, I extend a warm welcome to all who visit this platform.

Afghanistan stands at a profound crossroads. Since August 2021, our people have endured unprecedented hardship: the systematic dismantling of hard-won freedoms, the erasure of women and girls from public life, the silencing of civil society, and the deepening of a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent global attention. It is now the fifth academic year that girls in Afghanistan have been denied access to secondary and higher education under the Taliban’s ban, a stark and devastating manifestation of this ongoing injustice. Yet, the spirit of the Afghan people, their resilience, dignity, and enduring aspiration for a just and peaceful future, remains unbroken.

This Mission exists to ensure that their voices are heard. At the United Nations, we engage actively across the Security Council, the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, and other multilateral fora where Afghanistan’s future is shaped. We advocate for accountability, the protection of fundamental rights, inclusive governance, and a credible political horizon that reflects the will and diversity of the Afghan people.

We remain committed to working with all Member States, United Nations bodies, and international partners who share our conviction that peace, justice, and human rights are not mere aspirations, but obligations under international law.

I invite you to explore this website, engage with our statements and publications, and stand in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.

Statement on International Women's Day

New York – 8 March 2026

As we mark International Women’s Day, in Afghanistan, womanhood has effectively been criminalized.

Under the Taliban’s oppressive rule, girls are barred from attending school beyond the sixth grade. Women are prohibited from working. They cannot visit a park, a gym, or even seek medical care without a male guardian. Taliban decrees have gone so far as to criminalize the sound of a woman’s voice in public.

Afghan women have rightly called this system gender apartheid, and the United Nations has increasingly recognized it for what it is: gender persecution,  a crime against humanity. Yet declarations alone are insufficient. The international community must move from condemnation to consequence, ensuring that those responsible for these systematic abuses are held accountable under international law.

On this day, we honor the courage of Afghan women who risk everything simply to read, to teach, and to live on their own terms. Their struggle is a powerful reminder that gender equality is not a milestone already achieved; for millions of women and girls, it remains a matter of survival.

About the Mission

The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations is the legitimate and accredited diplomatic representation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan within the United Nations system. Established in accordance with the UN Charter, the Mission advocates for the rights, dignity, and well-being of all Afghans — particularly women, children, ethnic minorities, and all those whose fundamental freedoms have been suppressed.

Following the Taliban’s forced takeover in August 2021, the Mission has served as a critical voice for the Afghan people on the international stage, ensuring that Afghanistan’s perspectives are represented in global deliberations on peace, security, humanitarian assistance, and human rights. We engage proactively across the General Assembly, the Security Council, and specialized UN agencies — building partnerships, advancing accountability, and working toward an inclusive and democratic future for Afghanistan.
