Afghanistan stands at a profound crossroads. Since August 2021, our people have endured unprecedented hardship: the systematic dismantling of hard-won freedoms, the erasure of women and girls from public life, the silencing of civil society, and the deepening of a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent global attention. Afghanistan welcomed the unanimous adoption of the Security Council resolution extending UNAMA’s mandate for another year. In its statement, Afghanistan highlighted UNAMA’s vital role in supporting peace and stability, humanitarian assistance, human rights, and political dialogue, while welcoming the resolution’s emphasis on the rights of women and girls, inclusive governance, counterterrorism, and a credible Afghan-owned political process.

Closing Remarks at the Event on “Afghan Youth Perspectives on the Future of the United Nations in Afghanistan”

Speaking at the event “Afghan Youth Perspectives on the Future of the UN in Afghanistan,” hosted by the German Mission to the United Nations and Afghans for Progressive Thinking (APT), Afghanistan highlighted the resilience and determination of Afghan youth despite years of restrictions and exclusion. The statement emphasized that young Afghans, particularly young women, must be recognized as partners in shaping the country’s future and called for their meaningful participation in political processes, peacebuilding efforts, and international discussions on Afghanistan.

Addressing the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan, Afghanistan underscored that nearly five years after the Taliban’s takeover, the country remains trapped in a deep political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights crisis. The statement called for a unified and principled international approach centered on human rights, women’s rights, inclusive governance, counterterrorism, and a credible Afghan-owned political process, emphasizing that sustainable peace and stability cannot be achieved without a legitimate, representative, and accountable political order.

About the Mission

The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations is the legitimate and accredited diplomatic representation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan within the United Nations system. Established in accordance with the UN Charter, the Mission advocates for the rights, dignity, and well-being of all Afghans — particularly women, children, ethnic minorities, and all those whose fundamental freedoms have been suppressed.

Following the Taliban’s forced takeover in August 2021, the Mission has served as a critical voice for the Afghan people on the international stage, ensuring that Afghanistan’s perspectives are represented in global deliberations on peace, security, humanitarian assistance, and human rights. We engage proactively across the General Assembly, the Security Council, and specialized UN agencies — building partnerships, advancing accountability, and working toward an inclusive and democratic future for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan Elected Vice-President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly today elected the President, Vice-Presidents, and Bureau members of its 81st session.

The General Assembly elected H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81). Afghanistan extends its warm congratulations to Bangladesh and President-elect Dr. Khalilur Rahman and wishes him every success in leading the work of the General Assembly during the upcoming session.

Afghanistan is honored to have been elected as one of the Vice-Presidents of the 81st session of the General Assembly. This election reflects the continued confidence of Member States in Afghanistan’s constructive engagement within the United Nations and its commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.

As Vice-President of the 81st session, Afghanistan looks forward to working closely with the President-elect, fellow Vice-Presidents, and all Member States in advancing the priorities of the General Assembly and strengthening multilateral cooperation in support of international peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights.

Afghanistan Participates in Election of Members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Afghanistan participated in the election of members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) during the 19th Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP19), held at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Member States elected nine experts to serve on the Committee for the 2027–2030 term from a field of fifteen candidates. The election marked several important milestones, including the election of the first-ever representatives from Pacific Island countries to a United Nations human rights treaty body.

Among those elected were Fa’atino Mataafa Utumapu of Samoa, Villaney “Lany” Remengesau of Palau, Muhannad Al-Azzeh of Jordan, and Rigbe Gebrehawaria of Ethiopia, together with five other experts elected by Member States to serve on the Committee.

Afghanistan welcomes the successful conduct of the elections and congratulates all elected members. Afghanistan remains committed to the promotion and protection of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and supports the important work of the Committee in advancing the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities worldwide.
