Afghanistan stands at a profound crossroads. Since August 2021, our people have endured unprecedented hardship: the systematic dismantling of hard-won freedoms, the erasure of women and girls from public life, the silencing of civil society, and the deepening of a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent global attention. It is now the fifth academic year that girls in Afghanistan have been denied access to secondary and higher education under the Taliban’s ban, a stark and devastating manifestation of this ongoing injustice. Speaking at the event “Afghan Youth Perspectives on the Future of the UN in Afghanistan,” hosted by the German Mission to the United Nations and Afghans for Progressive Thinking (APT), Afghanistan highlighted the resilience and determination of Afghan youth despite years of restrictions and exclusion. The statement emphasized that young Afghans, particularly young women, must be recognized as partners in shaping the country’s future and called for their meaningful participation in political processes, peacebuilding efforts, and international discussions on Afghanistan.

Addressing the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan, Afghanistan underscored that nearly five years after the Taliban’s takeover, the country remains trapped in a deep political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights crisis. The statement called for a unified and principled international approach centered on human rights, women’s rights, inclusive governance, counterterrorism, and a credible Afghan-owned political process, emphasizing that sustainable peace and stability cannot be achieved without a legitimate, representative, and accountable political order.

Afghanistan welcomed the unanimous adoption of the Security Council resolution extending UNAMA’s mandate for another year. In its statement, Afghanistan highlighted UNAMA’s vital role in supporting peace and stability, humanitarian assistance, human rights, and political dialogue, while welcoming the resolution’s emphasis on the rights of women and girls, inclusive governance, counterterrorism, and a credible Afghan-owned political process.
About the Mission
The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations is the legitimate and accredited diplomatic representation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan within the United Nations system. Established in accordance with the UN Charter, the Mission advocates for the rights, dignity, and well-being of all Afghans — particularly women, children, ethnic minorities, and all those whose fundamental freedoms have been suppressed.
Following the Taliban’s forced takeover in August 2021, the Mission has served as a critical voice for the Afghan people on the international stage, ensuring that Afghanistan’s perspectives are represented in global deliberations on peace, security, humanitarian assistance, and human rights. We engage proactively across the General Assembly, the Security Council, and specialized UN agencies — building partnerships, advancing accountability, and working toward an inclusive and democratic future for Afghanistan.

The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations, in collaboration with a group of Member States and civil society partners, convened a high-level side event on the margins of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), entitled “Ensuring Access to Justice for Afghan Women and Girls: Documentation, Accountability, Protection, and the Rule of Law.”
The event brought together Afghan women leaders, legal experts, UN representatives, and Member States to examine the rapidly deteriorating access to justice for women and girls in Afghanistan. Participants highlighted how, since 2021, institutional and legal frameworks have been systematically dismantled and replaced with discriminatory policies that restrict women’s rights, legal status, and access to protection and redress.
